Kallocain by Karin Boye

Plot or Character Driven: Plot

I don't have much to say about the plot without spoiling this book, but I do recommend it for fans of dystopian fiction.

Throughout the novel, Leo struggles with upholding his society-given role and suppressing his innate personhood, which is prohibited in many forms in this idealistic society. Where good is only measured by your usefulness to the state, rather than doing what is best for one's betterment as an individual in any capacity.
I enjoyed how humanity was always trying to shine through regardless of the constraints, showing its unavoidable nature and highlighting the darkness that comes with totalitarianism.
Later on in the novel this internal conflict is focused on with his vulnerable "bonding" moments with his wife that needed to be drugged out of her (using Kallocain) as in this society, differing opinions, any form of individuality, bonding with family
and much more are criminalized as it is seen as diverging from the primary goal of state operation.

Very interesting and a good read for me.
