Suferințele tânărului Werther
by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Why did I read this? Because it is mentioned in Frankenstein and also, if I remember correctly, it was the first of a series of copycat suicides.
The story is told through a series of letter written by Werther to his dear friend Wilhelm as he laments about the unrequited love he feels for a young woman named Lotte. He was warned from the very beginning not to get too close to her as she was already engaged to be married, but this is romance, who are we to listen to logic? The letters become more and more obsessive as Werther goes from man in love to borderline stalker, to the point where he contemplates killing her and her husband.
His comparisons between the sick and those who have loved and lost are, pardon my French, fucking retarded and this man thinks himself an intellectual.
Honestly, I do not know how I feel about this, as I am viewing it with modern eyes, but I feel like the idea of love has not changed as centuries pass and thus we can safely say Werther would really need a therapist.
