Holy Mother. Easily one of my favorite fantasy novels of recent years. Dark and disturbing, beautifully crafted, and impressively readable. I couldn't put it down! It reminded me of so many other favorites: His Dark Materials, Chaos Walking, Graceling, and The Golem and the Jinni. Johansen creates a world that is at once deeply human, with flawed and complicated characters and political maneuvering, and utterly otherworldly, with mysterious and magical forces that we readers discover alongside the characters. Very excited to see where this series take us next.
