Reading this as an adult was TOTALLY different from what I remember as a kid. The extremely overt colonialism bothered me only slightly less than him marrying his cousin. Maybe that's ok in elephant society, but I would have bought that Babar would have known better, after becoming so "civilized".
I was so happy to find this book at the thrift store, but now I shudder every time I see it on my children's bookshelf!
