The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston
2.0

I really debated giving this a 2.5 and rounding up to a 3, but I couldn't do it.

This was a bookclub pick for February. We were looking for something spicy with a plot, which turns out, is just "romance." For me this was a let down on both fronts.

I listened to the audio book, narrated by Eileen Stevens, who did a very good job. I enjoyed that in parts she really performed rather than just read. I feel like if I'd picked up a physical copy, it would've been a DNF.

It's saccharine, overly quirky, and extremely corny. So corny that at one point even the main characters say so, and in the author's note, she mentions loving corny stuff. There were several moments where I groaned out loud while listening. The two lines I remember having visceral reactions to were when the main character refers to coffee (more than once) as "zoom zoom juice" and when another character states, "Suffocate me in your perfect breasts." If that's your thing, enjoy.

Additionally, it felt longwinded. There were sections that were repetitive and descriptions that went on way too long. With some editing, it could've been an 7 or 8 hour listen rather than 10.

This isn't a bad book, it's just not for me. Writing a book takes so much time and love, and I'm happy that the author put it into the world. I'm sure tons of people will love it. It just wasn't for me, and I can't imagine recommending it to someone I know.
