The American Heiress
by Daisy Goodwin
What’s in a name? Well, Cora Cash’s last name suits her, as that’s just what she is; flush with cash.
An American heiress, Cora has one desire; to find herself a mans with a title to boot. She finds herself (literally) falling into the lap of a Duke, which then unleashes a whirlwind of love, betrayal, and familial quarreling.
Alas, will I ever rate an audio book higher than a 3.75? Perhaps I’m just not the listening type. Cora’s story was interesting enough to keep me engaged during my work day, but boring enough that I didn’t want to sneak in a listen any other time of the day. It ultimately ended up being 468 pages (14 hours of audio) of rich people screwing over rich people, with some nice points of view from Cora’s lady’s maid thrown in. All though Downton Abbey has similar wealth and opulence, it somehow doesn’t come across as whiney as Cora Cash, and when you can sympathize with the heroine it leaves much to be desired.
