I am a sucker for a book retelling, but one based off one of the BEST IF NOT BEST, classical books Pride and Prejudice? Sign me up. With that said, I was slightly disappointed. I really liked that the characters were going to be people of color and the interesting dynamic between a POC family with money compared to one with very little but the FMC was a pain! Like don't get me wrong, I was totally expecting her to be judgmental-as was Elizabeth-and annoyed with the Darcy's but it was so much more than that, like in the original book Darcy low-key insulted Elizabeth but there was nothing. Like I get disliking him for coming into their block and gentrifying the neighborhood, acting uppity and better than everyone but I just felt like she disliked him for the sake of disliking him. Or well, the further the book moved along, she disliked him just because. Darius was also kind of just, there. And Janae and Ainsley's relationship fell kind of flat for me. Like, yeah it's a re-telling but girl you should have made him work so much harder than that to get back in your good graces. In this day and age, you think a sorry is sufficient enough? Nah, he would have had to work for that. I enjoyed the idea that was trying to be conveyed and the economical disadvantages being talked about but again, the FMC is like beyond stubborn and falling way to hard into stereotypes. I wanted more but I still think it's an interesting take on Pride and Prejudice.
It was a 2.75/5 for me but I really enjoyed the way it was written so I will definitely try more by the author.
