This book was fine. If I'm being honest, I picked it up because it had a WLW relationship in it but was also about something of substance, so I was hoping it would be best of both worlds. However, it was...mediocre in the WLW world and okay-enough in the fantasy world.

I enjoyed Priya and Malini's relationship, though it was quite complicated knowing whether Malini's interests lie with herself, with her kingdom/people, with Priya. I guess that made it fun but also I was like have some conviction (other than wanting to kill Chandra)!!! I also really enjoyed the nature elements of the book -- I loved Priya's ability to control nature around her. The landscapes were described beautifully. The "rot" was terrifying (it reminded me of a way worse version of Pinnochio). Super original and unique. Finally, the prevalence of fiery deaths in this book was frightening. Priya's past as a temple-child, Malini's near-death experience getting burned, the death of the army in the monastery while Chandra laughs manically -- creepy.
I was deathly afraid of fire alarms and of burning to death as a kid because I was insane so this definitely brought out that childhood trauma (in a good way? idk).

Finally one thing I really appreciated was the badass women who owned this book. All the men who we thought would do something did nothing because they were scared or stupid. Loved that the women took it upon themselves to clean their mess up. Now, they just gotta defeat
Chandra's
demonic ass and all will be well in Girl World :)

Now this isn't necessarily a stab at the author, but I think I'm just not good with long books. It takes a lot for me to think that 530 pages is worth it, and in this case, I don't think it is? There were sections to cut (like Rao's chapters... lol). Also, though the author had beautiful descriptions, I found it hard orienting myself in this world, in the Hirana, in the deathless waters.

Will I be reading the second book? I don't know. I'm really not a series person, and I notice I get bored in the same world but I also gotta know if
Malini and Priya will get back together, if Priya will need to make a decision to kill her should she threaten Ahiranya.
So we'll see. Either way, I am glad for the experience Jasmine Throne gave me :).
