40 on Justice: The Prophetic Voice on Social Reform by Omar Suleiman

hopeful informative inspiring reflective medium-paced

4.0

I've had this book up on my shelf since a year before I finally read it. This is the first of this genre that I read (Islamic theology) properly, and although it took me 1.5 months to complete it, I really liked it. This book, as the name suggests, is a compilation of 40 Ahadiths on the topic of Justice, ranging from interpersonal to sociopolitical context and sphere. Not that I didn't know already, but reading this book gave such a fresh perspective on how beautifully elaborate Islam is when it comes to social reforms and structure. From family matters to commonly ignored areas such as environment and animal rights, Islam, as a religion, is pretty systematic in ensuring an atmosphere of balance and justice is maintained. Though how much of it we actually follow and implement, that's a different topic.
The book is divided into 40 chapters, and written in a textbook+ self help book kind of way. It takes a while to read it, and rightly so. While I appreciate how comprehensively the book is written and the subjects covered in it, I also felt at times that the textbook nature of it made it a little repetitive for me at a few places. All in all, a good read. Very insightful, very detailed, and more than anything, it served as a tool of reflection for me in terms of what justice means in my personal capacity, relations, work life and a citizen, and reminded me to check my own self first before going out to preach the world. Would like to pick this up again in a few years maybe, for a renewed perspective.
