The Birds Of Aristophanes by Aristophanes, W. C. Green
4.0
If you read Lysistrata and really enjoyed it then definitely read this play as well. It's not as raunchy as Lysistrata but it is more whimsical and definitely has its own charm. I would love to see it performed, and it is just begging for a talented costumer and set designer to really make it shine. It's very accessible to a modern audience, even if they lack much previous knowledge about the culture of the time and place. I enjoyed its cheeky blasphemy and its raucous, colorful, ridiculous tone. However its just a little too goofy, a little too light, a little too focused on design. It is entertaining, brings up some timeless criticisms about society, is witty and creative...But it is also somewhat breezy, superficial and ultimately does not surpass the limitations of a comedy in the same way Lysistrata did.
