11th Hour by James Patterson

3.0

This new book in the Women's Murder Club series started out showing real promise. It is true that you cannot fault Patterson for starting books slowly, and this one does not do that either. But it was even more than that, with two gruesome cases in the mix, one involving a killer going after drug dealers and another one the finding of severed heads in a mansion, things we rolling along great. On top of this, the personal lives of the main characters were primed for interesting events, since Yuki is in love, Cindy is engaged, and Lindsay is pregnant.

So the stage was set. The fact that the guy going after drug dealers, Revenge, was suspected to be a cop only added another interesting aspect to the mix, since we were not sure how close to home this was going to hit for Lindsay and her friends. Then, things started going awry. First, right after we start to think Revenge may be someone close to Lindsay, the author lets us know that two of the main suspects are not it. What is even worse, the story goes on as if this was a possibility for Lindsay and Conklin, so it gets kind of boring. Wouldn't it have been much better to leave the suspense hanging?

But then, to make matters worse, Lindsay starts to show the effects pregnancy is having on her hormones. It starts out alright, just minor things here and there, but soon the plot develops along the lines of a bad soap opera and we end up with a lousy story in our hands in which the characters act in ridiculous ways.

On the plus side, the cases keep the story fairly entertaining, and even though the way in which things get resolved is a little anti-climatic, it is enough to make this an OK book. I guess it's my fault for expecting Patterson to ever get back to his early greatness, but it looks like I will have to adjust to the consistent mediocre quality delivered in most of the books in these last few years and keep reading me as a fast read for when I don't really know what else to grab.
