Up in the Old Hotel by Joseph Mitchell

5.0

Up in the Old Hotel is one of those rare treasured books that far exceeds expectations. I am confident that this is a book that I will return to again to read and re-read.

Joseph Mitchell paints portraits of New Yorkers that are poignant, quirky, interesting, humorous, picturesque, and all done with obvious love for the people of the city. His focus is on those often overlooked or laughed at by society: the street preacher, the bum, the bearded lady. He presents them in all their humanity with compassion and honesty.

I recommend this book to anyone.
