Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik
4.0
I’m gonna be honest—90% of the reason I read this book was the badass cover art. And, while it didn’t quite live up to the hype I envisioned, it was still a pretty solid story. The story is told in first person by the protagonist who is an intergalactic princess running away from her father who has betrothed her to someone she doesn’t want to marry. In the process, she encounters a wanted war criminal who simultaneously terrifies and arouses her. Together, they escape captivity and go on the run together.
The tone of the story oscillates between semi-erotic and action/adventure. There is an overarching political universe that factors into some people of the dialogue, but it isn’t super complicated. It seems like it’s mostly a device to fuel the escape sequences and forbidden love encounters.
I think this story is well-written. It’s a fun adventure and it’s got a hint of political intrigue. I’d definitely consider continuing the story in the sequel to see where it goes.
