House Made of Dawn by N. Scott Momaday

5.0

This is another wonderful book recommended by Goodreads group, Around the world in 80 books. I had never heard of book, nor the author even though the book is 50 years old. The story is beautifully written and a joy to read. I have found this to often be the case when a poet develops a work of prose. The beauty in the descriptions of simple human actions, such as Abel cutting wood or the Padre driving his car and applying the brakes. I read this on Kindle but have ordered a printed copy as this is one to keep on hand.

There is such a sadness throughout the book. Abel is an interesting character, a young man scarred by service in WWII as well as trying to navigate the world of the white man and maintaining his Native American roots. The book so beautifully showed the beauty of the people and land as well as the difficulties and heartbreak of both.
