Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

3.0

I never read this book as a kid but of course I’ve seen the original movie with Gene Wilder dozens of times. I feel a bit mixed about this book. The whimsy and darkness that I love about the movie is definitely here in the story. Charlie Bucket is such an endearing character. But it’s also a product of it’s time with some of the language used. Also, the way Dahl talks about overweight people is pretty brutal at times—very over the top. I think I’ll just keep watching the movie and probably won’t be reading this one to my son.
