The Vaster Wilds by Lauren Groff
3.0

Sentence by sentence and paragraph by paragraph, this cooks because GROFF.

But there's not enough story here. It's a "running from" rather than a "running to" novel, and that lack of destination or purpose beyond animal survival limits this novel. She runs. She hides. She builds fires. She fishes. She shits hot liquid streams. But the daily struggle to survive is forged on an a simple refusal to die rather than a desperate need to live as she has so little to look forward to.

She is a survivor, and there's something heroic about that. But by novel's end, despite relentless forward progress and a great deal of literal running, I'm not sure how far we've come.
