This Is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar
5.0

I don’t usually write reviews but I need to rave because this book deserves the praise. Although I don’t usually gravitate towards sci-fi/fantasy, I had heard great things and decided to give it a shot. I’m SO glad I did.

The prose is absolutely beautiful and drew me in immediately. While this meant I needed to concentrate in order to understand what was going on at times, I consider that a good thing. This book demands that you be fully present and alert in such a refreshing way, and it made me feel much more immersed in the story, like I was REALLY digesting it. I also loved the poetic quality of the letters between Blue and Red. While they were poetic and romantic, they were also witty at the same time. I think that this approach to depicting the unfolding of their dynamic was really effective in the context of this story. Reading the letters added a sort of intimacy, like the reader is truly privy to what’s going on in these characters’ minds and “in on” the treasonous nature of their correspondence.

I can understand how the writing style may not be everyone’s cup of tea as it is pretty dense. By my tastes though? Incredible. I adored how fluid and lyrical it felt and if you also appreciate this style of prose, I think you’ll love this book too.

I wish I could experience reading this for the first time over and over and over again.
