Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom

5.0

it's so rare for me to enjoy every single essay in a collection like this, but tressie mcmillan cottom manages to blow it out of the water every time for me. her essays discuss a wide range of topics like beauty standards, region and class differences, education, ethnicity, etc, but more importantly, i adore how she is able to engage with these topics in such an insightful way. she connects the dots for me with each essay, and at the end, i'm left marveling over what she's written.

each essay is written with an intersectional lens, and in spite of what you think you might be reading based off the essay title, the author manages to weave in elements from her previous essays. for example, "black is over (or, special black)" explores the ethnic differences within the black community, but she also brings in factors like class, colorism, education, and to some implied extent, gender, to her analysis.

truly one of my favorite reads, and i was so so reluctant to return this to the library since i wanted my own copy so badly.
