The Mister
by E.L. James
Read this solely for a charity fundraiser. 1/5 for the book and awful story. 5/5 for ACLU fundraiser fighting racial injustice via a read-a-thon. The author is not equipped to deal with serious topics and obviously handles them poorly (ignorance or intent). The writing is crap and mediocre at best. The author really struggles creating a flow and describes everything and everyone repeatedly, which takes the reader out of the story with every unnecessary adjective. It feels painfully obvious that a thesaurus was open and constantly being used while this was written. The story itself is nothing but tropes and cliches. The main characters were also very unappealing - misogynistic, elitists, and ignorant is just the tip of the ice berg. And of course the main female character is the "born sexy yesterday" trope. The author also wrote the main male character through a first-person perspective and the main female character as third-person perspective, which did not do any favors of making the male lead less douchey (rich white hetero male privilege ahoy!). Overall, this book is just plain bad. There are a lot of other romance novels out there (and fanfic) that are written so much better and are more cognisant and aware of societal and cultural dynamics than this will ever be. Obviously, I do not recommend the book and am kind of apalled that movie rights were already purchased (especially given the current unjust atmosphere). What I do recommend is donating to the ACLU and reading for a cause.
