The Library of the Dead by T.L. Huchu
4.0

Urban fantasy YA with interesting world building (set in a newr-future dystopian Edinburgh!), lots of diversity and fantastic characters. The POV character is a girl of Zimbabwean heritage (this is a first-person narration with a distinctive voice), her sidekick is South-Asian and a wheelchair user
Some pacing issues, the story starts unfolding very slowly, it took me quite a while to get into it. I hope that the pacing/plot issues turns out to be the 'teething problems' of the first instalment in a series. The story often veers off into horror territory at and that's definitely not my thing. Still, I will totally check out the next books in the series, I love stories with a strong sense of place (which 'The Library of the Dead' has in spades) and hope the magic will be fleshed out more (after Aaronovitch's truly seamless weaving of the laws of physics and magic the bar is quite high, T. L. Huchu hasn't quite sold me off on his version of this yet).
