Obsidio by Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman

Wow, what a finale! Over a week later and I still feel like I have a bit of book hangover.

Obsidio was a fantastic way to end The Illuminae Files trilogy. Like Gemina, this book introduces new characters and scenarios that goes further to demonstrate the scale of the current conflict. But in this book, the new characters in this scenario also reveal the tragedies and horror that ensued as a result of BeiTech's work. While I was at first skeptical of the introduction of new characters in a different setting, this really worked in the story's favor in what I felt was the most emotional and thrilling books in the series.

If you've read my past reviews on The Illuminae Files, you've read about how pleased I was about the amount of planning and research that went into technical aspects of the series, and that can also be said for Obsidio. I especially loved how this book gave insights on AIDAN's thought process and decision-making capabilities. The series of conversations AIDAN has with others contributes to how AIDAN learns, and watching AIDAN evolve based on these conversations was fascinating.
SpoilerAlthough the results were absolutely tragic.

I read the physical version of this book, and have heard wonderful things about the audiobook. I will definitely be returning to this series, most likely by listening to the audiobook with the book in hand. The Illuminae Files was quite the ride, and is absolutely one of my favorites this year.
