I really liked the characters of this book, and I loved the setting. And those are what earned this the 4 stars.
But the plot was a bit of a mess. The central conflict was ignored a lot of the time and shifted throughout the book, which I didn't mind overly much. The bigger issue was the time jumps. Character relationships were developed in those gaps that made it hard for me to always understand motivations. There were at least 3 times in the books where Laini was about to have an important conversation, and then the chapter would end, and the next chapter started several days later.
So the plot wasn't always strong, but I didn't mind. The fascinating world and the compelling characters that inhabit it were what really kept me going. I loved learning more and more about the magic and the different cultures. I would have enjoyed a book that was just the middle section of Laini and her found family in the city. It was really great.
