This is a great book — for the current time! There’s so much of this book that as I was reading, I wondered “because of DOGE, do these people still have a job?” Because this book is all about the faceless people who really WORK in the government, solving problems and dealing with issues that very few know about. Yet, if these people didn’t do that work, our society could actually lose lives, or go bankrupt. Case in point: a gentleman at the IRS who has gone after cybercriminals and has managed to save BILLIONS of dollars of taxpayer money. Take that DOGE! The chapter by W. Kamau Bell also gets to much of the point of this book, by asking the subjects in his chapter (about the Department of Justice and antitrust laws) what exactly would happen if so many of the people in government were let go. The answer? It would be chaos. Guess what? It’s turning in chaos even as I write this review. This is a book that EVERYONE should read, and would be great book for high schoolers to learn more about how government works.
