The Complete Joy of Homebrewing
by Charles Papazian
This is (so far) my favorite homebrew book. Papazian's got such an upbeat, relaxed approach to the whole thing. He takes a new hobby that could be very daunting and shows you how it really doesn't have to be that bad.
The first portion of the book explains all the basics of procedure, gives a nice list of equipment to collect, and gives some suggestions about how to set up your homebrew station in your kitchen. It's like having your big brother help you get started on a project. There are clear detailed explanations, puns, and anecdotes.
The rest of the book focuses on recipes and charts explaining some of the more advanced avenues of brewing. Even here Papazian keeps it light with jokes and research about the origins of the recipes.
If you have an interest in picking up homebrewing as a hobby, I highly recommend getting a copy of this book, relaxing and having a homebrew. :)
