Tinderbox: One Family's Story of Adoption, Neurodiversity, and Fierce Love by Lynn Alsup

4.0

Thanks to She Writes Press for an ARC of this very intense read. As an adoptive parent, it brought into focus a lot of the things you cannot change about the children you welcome into your family.

I applaud the Alsups for their tenacity in working to build a family from chaos not of their own making. It's helpful for readers to know that kids come to adoption with built-in trauma, no matter the age. Their brains, their DNA is changed as a result. The Alsups' journey to a relatively whole family was fraught and hard to read. They never let go of their kids, even when the string tying them together was at the point of snapping.

I knocked it down a star because I felt there were multiple times that Alsup included far too many mundane details about any particular day - I started to skim as a result. I also wondered how good her spritiual direction could have been without her life falling apart all around her. I also wondered if her taking on all of the mindfulness, meditation, etc. skills and certifications was helping her. But only she can answer that.

The FASCETS program as described by Alsup is certainly interesting, but I hope it is not used to diagnose people incorrectly.
