I’ve wanted to read this book for years since enjoying the Hitchcock film and noticed it on my library app at only 150 pages, which reiterated my perception from the film of this as a pacy thriller that I could probably lose a pleasant afternoon to.

In short: if it’s even possible for a 150 page book to drag, John Buchan achieved this. It seems Hitchcock took the name and core premise (man finds himself mixed up in a spy conspiracy, goes on a jolly romp around Scotland) and added basically everything thrilling or suspenseful about it.
