Graveyard Shift by Jenn Burke
4.0

Well, GRAVEYARD SHIFT is a great conclusion to the NOT DEAD YET series and I’m so glad I read these books! Wes and Hudson are truly solid in this one as they’ve worked out some of their trust issues in the previous books and now they’re living together and dealing with Wes’s new godhood status. But things get complicated when Hudson’s niece shows up, shifters suddenly start getting killed, and a group of newly turned vampires starts terrorizing Toronto’s paranormal residents. Wes, Hudson, and the rest of their found family all come together to investigate what’s going on and help those in need.

I’ll keep this review short to avoid spoilers because there’s a lot of new things going on in GRAVEYARD SHIFT, but I will say that I loved the addition of the shifters and Sam’s character was really funny. Of course not everything comes easy for the group and Wes in particular is struggling with balancing his new powers and trying to make sure he’s not pulling magic from beyond where it’s too dangerous. I will admit one of the things I didn’t like about this one was how little Wes used his magic and it felt like it didn’t fit with the rest of the series, though I understand Wes was being overly cautious.

While this last book doesn’t focus as strongly on the relationship between Wes and Hudson, there were some really great moments of vulnerability between them. It was great to see how far Wes and Hudson have come but there were also some truly heartbreaking moments in GRAVEYARD SHIFT and just be prepared because it’s a doozy. My heart was breaking for these characters as the last 25% brings us the final confrontation and losses were felt all around.

I’ll definitely be reading more by Jenn Burke because I truly enjoyed her writing style and storytelling and I can’t wait to read the spin off series, ASHES & DUST.
