Real Easy
by Marie Rutkoski
4 stars. I really enjoyed this as Rutkosi’s adult fiction debut, particularly that she chose a crime/thriller - I found interesting. I’ve enjoyed some of her other books so was expecting to enjoy this.
What I liked:
- Strength if this book is in its character development
- In a short amount of time you get real insight into each of the dancers lives, families
- You also get a lot of insight into the detectives as well, mainly Holly
- There is a real connection with Samantha/Ruby
- I felt like each character felt alive and the atmosphere of the novel was palpable - the setting felt real and the emotions were raw
- I liked how the book was centred mostly on the girls - even when it came to unmasking who the killer was, I liked that we limited his POVs throughout as the focus should be on the victims and not the killers - we never really find out *why* he did what he did (what is ever justification for killing anyway) but we find out how it impacted the victims family’s and the other characters a lot more which was more just I think.
Some may say they didn’t understand the killer/his motivations etc but I think it’s right this is positioned from the perspective mostly of the dancers and them navigating their lives and the focus should be them, not the killer
What I didn’t like:
- Potentially one too many character POVs (I can’t care about all of them and it gets a bit too much)
- would have liked to see more of a certain character at the end and if they went on to do the thing they wanted
- generally it would have been good to see a bit more at the end and what happened in their futures
Fave quote: n/a
Fave characters: Georgia/Gigi and Samantha/Ruby
Ratings
Worldbuilding: 3.5/5
