To Be Taught, If Fortunate by Becky Chambers

Started and finished this one within 12 hours, can’t express how much I love Becky Chambers 🥺 I feel like I can definitely say she’s one of my favourite authors now, and I’m so happy that I still have a few more of her books to read - I never want them to end! Just like I never wanted this book to end, which is v sad because it was only 150 pages and it was perfect. Science fiction is one of my least read genres but the way Chambers melds sci fi with pure human heart just gets me every time. In this one, she explores the question of whether space travel is ethical - her characters venture to new worlds intending only to gather knowledge and learn, in the face of corporations & governments who’d have them explore space in search of something new to sell or a new planet to colonise. They aren’t perfect, they’re flawed and mistakes are made, and I absolutely fell in love with them all. I also love how queer people just exist in Chambers’ books, no fanfare, just vibes. I was not expecting to cry, but cry I did at the end of the Opera chapter 😭 Literally just perfect, like that girl from that one tiktok, perfect perfect perfect!
