Thank you to the author for providing a free ARC of the book.

I'm a fan of sports romances but there are only a handful of really good sapphic ice hockey romances. Now, after the release of Like a Power Play, there's one more on that short list.

I read the author's debut novel, Puppy Love, in 2024 and I have to say the writing and plotting has improved a lot. Like a Power Play is pretty perfect new adult (college junior & senior) romance.

Both main characters have their baggage that they operate their relationships with. Both Darcy and Peyton are written well, they feel like real young people, and I really enjoyed reading their story. The way these two try to come to terms with their past, present and future, and their budding romantic relationship, is a really delightful reading experience. The chemistry between these two hockey players (one retired, now student coach) is really fun and there's a nice amount of pining by both.

The book is pretty light but there are some angsty plots and heavier topics in the mix. Darcy's chronic illness is described so realistically that I could almost feel her pain.

Like in Puppy Love, there's a mix of friends and family members that offer a sounding board to the main characters. Although there's a big cast, it's mostly easy to keep record of who's who. The only cast related issue I have is that the hockey players have a lot of nicknames. It took some time to connect the names to the characters.

The author states in the author's notes that there's less spice in Like a Power Play than there was in Puppy Love. I don't think it affects the experience negatively at all. Like the writing overall, the spicy scenes have more quality compared to Puppy Love.
