This is the kind of book that loses about 80% of its appeal when you know what the twist is. It's well written, don't get me wrong, but knowing what the ✨big reveal✨ is really ruins the suspense.

I also find the writing style very lackluster. It's not necessarily this book's fault, because it was so popular in this period, but being told the story after the fact instead of following along with the protagonist is a much less engaging way of reading for me. Wouldn't it have been more thrilling to read from Dr. Jekyll as he's transforming into Mr. Hyde than to hear it told from an outside perspective? I'm also really not fond of the "deformity as a visual representation of villainy" trope, but this was published in 1886.
