The Horizon by Jung Ji-Hoon
4.0
The Horizon, Volume 1 by JH is a hauntingly dark and atmospheric exploration of survival in a fractured world. The narrative is moody, filled with tension and despair, as it follows two children struggling to navigate a post-apocalyptic landscape. What stuck with me about this volume is how much is conveyed without much dialogue—every panel speaks volumes, with art that perfectly complements the grim tone. The broken world around them is oppressive, and the characters’ inner turmoil is palpable, making the silence feel all the more suffocating. It’s a beautifully tragic portrayal of the human spirit pushed to its limits. And that near ending scene? FUCK ME. As a father....UGH.
The emotional weight of the story rests heavily on the shoulders of the two young protagonists, who face overwhelming odds as they try to survive in this desolate environment. The absence of constant exposition allows readers to slowly piece together the magnitude of the world’s collapse, while the raw, minimalist dialogue and harsh realities they face leave a deep impact. It’s a story of resilience, but also one of loss and hopelessness. Sign me up for volume 2. I hope my library gets them in.
