Upright Women Wanted
by Sarah Gailey
Skeletal, slapdash execution of a cool idea - badass lgbtq librarians in a near future dystopia. The fight scenes and weapon talk are poor, the characters two dimensional, and the love interest feels premature and forced and cliched. There’s other stuff I don’t like - some betrayals are I guess worse than others for the protagonist - but in the end all I feel is disappointed. I should have been among the target demographic of this book, and the idea is rad, but this feels like bare bones of a story at best. I can’t recommend it. Reminiscent in some ways of An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris. I hope the author will try again, and other authors too, because there is a place for these stories. I’m pulling for you. We all are.
