I liked reading the dynamic between the sisters. For some reason I gravitate towards books where there's an ugly duckling and a golden child (I wonder what that's about). This one is different from most other stories with this trope because the ugly duckling doesn't magically rise above their circumstances. Instead of getting the validation that she looks for, Korede ends the book with her loyalty to her perfect sister reinforced and Ayoola's behavior remains unchallenged. I didn't expect a perfect ending though because the author does a good job weaving the family history explaining why the sisters are the way they are into the narrative, and you can tell that things aren't going to change much.
