The Devious Husband by Catharina Maura
2.0

The story was far too disjointed. Chapters were cut off right as they were about to get good and a continuation would’ve helped with bringing depth and character development to the story and people. For instance the birthday dinner for Xavier’s mother was cut off after introductions. Why couldn’t we see that play out so we could’ve seen the relationship between Sierra and her in laws growing? Then all of a sudden she starts calling her mother in law and father in law, mom and dad and it feels so awkward and cringey because we’ve only ever seen them interact like twice and they barely spoke to each other during those interactions.

The book was filled with paragraphs of telling instead of showing like when we missed out on sierra finding out about Xavier joining poker night. This could’ve provided great development of their relationship as she learned about his connection with her brothers all so that he could learn about her. Instead everything kept happening too fast. They kept using sex to show the relationship forming instead of using meaningful moments. I get that part of the hardship was him opening up but there could’ve been others ways to show their relationship going from enemies to lovers. I didn’t buy that they loved each other. And their issues were super repetitive and boring.

I was so disappointed in this story.
