This is my absolute favorite series but I have no idea how I feel about this installment. Overall I really enjoyed it and liked how it concluded Vanja and Emeric’s stories however the last 25% I don’t think was the right move to close out the book or was even necessary. I also felt that there were so many names and families in this book that there neededdd to be a family tree at the front or back or somewhere at least! I understood the plot and everything but keeping track of all the side characters and royals esp with so many murders got really difficult at times. However, despite my issues with the plot twist at the end, I enjoyed this and liked the actual ending a fair amount.
Like I said I felt like the last 25% was just weird and off the rails (not in a good way). I don’t think having a whole other universe be created etc necessarily added much to the story. The story could have still had Irmgard as the main villain and brought her back from the dead without all the weird shit at the end lol. I also reallyyyy did not enjoy the section with Vanja being absolutely abused and humiliated at the ball - it just had vibes of the Joker movie and it was really not it for me. It felt like a villain origin story and not in a good way either (especially since that wasn’t even the goal of the story/plotline).
