Calling on Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
5.0

Look, I know a lot of people would be disappointed by the ending -and I am too, a little, if I'm honest- but the sharp observational wit of Dealing with Dragons is back and for that I love this book.

Are there some wet blankets that mar the fun of this book? Yes, Killer and Vamist are perplexing and perhaps pointless characters that could have been done away with or reworked if there had been time. And it's definitely tempting to knock a star off just because of Killer, who is meant as comic relief but moans too often about being hungry to be much more than an annoyance.

But Morwen's practicality does shine through, as does Cimorene's heroic nature and even if she does have a bit of baby brain going on, there is that glimmer of possibility that in another life, Cimorene could've been a witch too.
Plus the characters of the cats are fun, even if they are numerous and hard to keep track of. For those things, the fifth star stays on.
