This felt quick for such a thick book. The characters were well drawn, the setting was fascinating. It's an interesting magic system and a central mystery that draws you in.

I can't say that the romance was a very strong component. It was there, but I didn't care about it much. You know who is going to end up with whom from the beginning, it feels inevitable. Toward the middle, it felt like the author was inventing reasons to keep characters apart, and it felt clunky. The secondary romance was more interesting, or at least I was more emotionally invested in it.

It's split-perspective was so well done it was almost unnoticeable at times. The point of view flows seamlessly between several characters, never jumping away from the action mid-scene or jarring you out of one storyline and into another. It was almost as though the characters handed off perspective to each other. And since all plots are closely aligned, it was never confusing.

I'm intrigued by the mystery of the island, and can't wait to read the sequel.
