Home After Dark
by David Small
Russell is an only child living with his parents in Ohio when they break up and his Mom runs off with a football player. Russell and his Dad take off for California, where he is certain his sister will take them in. Instead, she redirects them to northern California where Russell and his Dad settle down and find a place of their own. Russell hooks up with a variety of colorful characters while his Dad tries to deal with his own demons.
This is nearly 400 pages, but there is little dialogue and most of the panels tell Russell's story wordlessly. Because of that, I was able to read this book in an hour or so. This book deals with bullies, animal abuse, and sexual experimentation. There is also some alcohol use. I wish there would have been more dialogue or text but I otherwise enjoyed this book.
