As I warned in my review of Wild Magic, I don't think I can ever come close to objectivity with these books.
But, based on the voices in the larger literary world around me, I do think I'm safe in saying that Tamora Pierce is a god among men.
I always wanted to read the rest of the Immortals quartet as a kid, but my library only had the first one, and I think I was somehow self-conscious about asking for the rest at birthdays or holidays. So, reading this now—and so wholeheartedly, unabashedly loving this now, 14-or-so years later—felt like a love letter to the child I was, the kid who just wanted to have some wild magic and live with her friends in Tortall.
Tamora Pierce, Robin McKinley, and Anne McCaffrey formed the holy trinity of authors that profoundly shaped my young heart. I hope I never stop talking about them.
