Life After Life
by Kate Atkinson
I loved this. I devoured it in one day, and although I have some questions about structure (not sure I needed the prologue, as waiting for that version was distracting, and I wish it had ended with Sylvie and the scissors), I thought this was smart, thoughtful, thought-provoking stuff. And of course every sentence is just right -- Atkinson's prose never falters. I was very much reminded of A.S. Byatt, especially The Children's Book, but the nonlinear plotting and the meditation on possibility, fate, and time sets it apart from anything else. Literary, truly speculative, and one I would like to reread and dissect more closely.
