humorous in places, comical even.  but the rest is deadly serious.  this probably shouldn't have been my take away from this novel, but i couldn't help thinking throughout...i know men and boys can and do get really messed up by religion, but that is nothing compared to what religion can do and does to girls and women.  family dynamics are at play here for sure, but these too are grounded in religion.  sad.
