When Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was announced a few years ago I was very skeptical of it and I never read it (I read the original trilogy as they were being released and I loved them, and I've re-read them a number of times as an adult and still really enjoy them, so it wasn't that I don't like the books). When this book was announced I decided to finally read Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and it turns out I was right to be skeptical. I think the book gets somewhere interesting by the end, but I don't like the first half, and I think some of the names are Too silly even for the baseline of silliness in this series.

But, I was more optimistic about this book and I was right to be. I don't rate this as highly as the original The Hunger Games, and I don't think it works as well as a standalone book, but I think it's a very effective prequel and does a good job of building out more of the world.

I think anyone who is a fan of the series as a whole will be satisfied with this entry, and it also makes me excited about the possibility of more prequels.
