I bought this book because i saw that it had been turned into a mini-series on HBO. i have not seen any of the episodes yet, but after reading the book, i will definitely be planning to check it out. This book was written by an embedded reporter who ended up attached to a company of Force Recon Marines who were the lead element in the invasion of Iraq. Clearly the author is insane, but he ended up with an amazing book. This is the most fascinating and interesting book about war that i have read in many years. The author gives an amazingly detailed picture of life for the grunt Marines, complete with the hardships of living in the desert, wild urban combat, supply screwups, incompetent officers, heroism, boredom, guilt and all. The author got fantastic access to a lot of the chain of command so he was able to complete the picture after the fact, filling in what the platoon level commanders did not know at the time of the action. Many memorable characters emerge, both loved and hated.
The book reads like a mix of MASH and Blackhawk Down... i could not put it down... luckily i was able to knock it out in one long plane ride. Highly recommended.
