The Housekeeper and the Professor
by Yōko Ogawa
a lot of things i liked about this but oh the maths!! the maths was integral (ba dum tss) to this book, driving the plot forward and giving the professor and the housekeeper and Root common ground every time they met again after the professor’s memory was wiped. it felt very natural to read their discussions to make even simple math have meaning and beauty and relevance to the lives of the two very different title characters. and seeing how the professor’s love of maths stayed with the narrator (and Root) was just lovely.
