Adam Bede by George Eliot
4.0

Primarily a character study of common types of people. That said, the writing is glorious and the exploration of a small village, the environment, the personalities, and family life draws one on chapter after chapter. In a way it's a 19th century tea cozy but the underlying issues are very grownup and require maturity to solve or endure as the case may be. Loving the wrong people moves the action from scene to scene but this is a real life story not a Hollywood drama. PBS classic type production would be a good fit, but then you'd miss some pleasing smile inducing phrases and descriptions.
