You Know Me Well
by David Levithan, Nina LaCour
I feel like a cynical twenty-something who has lost touch with her teenage self saying this, but my biggest beef with this book is that the characters just didn’t feel like high schoolers to me at ALL. Maybe I’m spoiled because we have so many great examples of accurate high school representation in the media these days (Sex Education, literally everything Alice Oseman has ever created), that I forget what it’s usually like. And when I first read this book at fifteen (in London, btw) the book definitely resonated with me. So it’s probably just me being bitter and anxious because I’m no longer a whimsical teenage girl.
Apart from this I have to say, that some parts felt really fabricated and cringey to me and the novel is very much a product of its time, so I can’t really complain about the cheuginess of it all, yet it was a little irritating to me.
