Well Traveled
by Jen DeLuca
Luisa, ‘LuLu’ to her one fun cousin, is a successful lawyer who has zero fun in her life because she only has time for her job. Until it all comes crashing in on her and she decides its time for a change. Good thing she has this revelation in the middle of a Ren Faire with some friends nearby. The Dueling Kilts and comes to her musical rescue. And front man Dex is easy on the ears and eyes and is a surprisingly good friend. But is it all fun and games at the Faire? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: contemporary romance, renaissance faires, taking risks, tarot readers and psychics, opposites attract, new beginnings, fun banter, sweet and spicy, actual adults,
Lulu finds herself needing a break and decisively takes one in the most spontaneous of ways. A month of traveling with ren faire musicians will shake up her priorities whether she likes it or not. After searching for a place to feel useful, Lulu finds herself at the fortuneteller tents and wonders if her new friends might be a little crazy, or a bit too insightful. And then there’s Dex. Dex is known for his playboy ways and has a girl at every faire. But to Lulu he’s a perfect gentleman, friendly even. She starts to notice there might be more to the hunk of man muscle and when she gets back to her life, she might miss the Ren Faire more than she’s willing to look into.
It’s the fourth installment of the Well Met series and I was so ready to get back to the Ren Faire with my friends. We have Mitch’s cousin Lulu and Stacey, Daniel, Dex, and a whole bunch of new faces as we take our story on the road… and it was a ton of fun. Lulu is a great character and while it’s the ‘career girl slows down trope’ it’s a fun take with medieval flair. She smart and funny and it’s exciting to watch her grow through her time away from her regular life. It takes a bit longer for Lulu to get integrated into the faire life because of the pacing. There are a few little scenes that are unnecessary and cause the first section to drag a bit. But she finds her stride and new friends, all the while us readers are pining for the promised romance.
What I was a bit worried about, but interested to see, was how serious, lawyer Lulu gets paired with transient, musician Dex. And I’m happy to say my worry was for naught. Dex really got to shine in the book. We get to see him behind the performer curtain and he is more sweet, thoughtful, and down to earth than anyone would expect. Luckily, Lulu sees that too. Unluckily for us it takes them awhile to get on the same page, but it is a nicely paced slow burn that makes sense for a planner like Lulu and someone shy about non-fling love like Dex. But oh my, are we glad that Dex has a lot of practice. It definitely paid off.
All in all, Well Traveled is a sweet and spicy story full of laughs, kilts, tarot cards, and a whole heaping helping of personal growth… which of course, is my favorite part. Along with glimpses of all our Well Met family’s lives.
