Beware That Girl by Teresa Toten
3.0
I received a copy of this book in exchange for sharing my fair and honest opinion.
Given my love of both psychological thrillers and young adult novels, Beware That Girl appeared to be right up my alley. I found it a good book overall, but in the end, it fell short for me.Kate was an excellent character, by far my favorite of the two point-of-views the book provides. She had been through many hardships in her life, and that had shaped her into the person she is within the pages of Beware That Girl. She is not perfect, far from it, but I feel like deep down she is genuinely... good.
It is made obvious from the beginning that something isn't quite right with her; something happened in her past but what, well that would be a spoiler, so I'm not going to say. I can say she and Kate still find themselves becoming fast friends, leading to Kate moving into Olivia's home.
I enjoyed reading the book, and I kept turning the pages to discover what the big reveal would be, even though I had a pretty good idea(I was right). Some of the characters were developed quite well, Kate for instance, and the woman she worked for, however, the majority you just didn't get to learn a lot about. I have a feeling this was done to give a bit of mystery, but it resulted in the vast majority being quite flat. Nonetheless, the ones that weren't kept me entranced enough to want to finish the story. Sadly, I felt like there was so much missing in the book that would have made it so much better for me. There just wasn't a lot of detail, especially after the big reveals. Things happened too fast for me from there and left me feeling like everything wasn't resolved. The ending was something I suspected would occur, though, and to me, it made up for a bit of what happened before. No spoilers, but honestly chilling.
Overall, I would recommend this to YA readers who are casual thriller fans, but make sure you are okay with leaving things feeling a little unresolved. I will read more from this author in the future, because, despite the pitfalls I encountered, the author's compelling style of writing is what kept me reading til the end. This review will be posted on Electively Paige on release day
