Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell
by Brandon Sanderson
"Don't kindle flame, don't shed the blood of another, don't run at night.
These things draw shades."
Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell is a dark and atmospheric story from Brandon Sanderson. Silence Montane runs a waystop in the Forests of Hell where deadly shades roam freely. To avoid the shades, the people must follow the Simple Rules as quoted above. Silence has mastered these rules not only to provide shelter to travelers, but also to aid in her secret work as a bounty hunter of dangerous criminals. This is one of my favorite novellas from Sanderson and is perfect for spooky season. It was originally written for the Dangerous Women anthology edited by George R.R. Martin & Gardner Dozois, and Silence definitely fits that definition! Although this story is set in Sanderson's cosmere, it does not tie in strongly with his main series, so it's accessible to all readers.
